“A Separate Peace” by John Knowles
“A Separate Peace” is the story of Gene Forrester, who recalls his student life at the boarding school of Davon, New Hampshire. The year is 1944, Gene is 18 years old and lives together with his closest friend and roommate Phineas – Finny. Despite they get along so well, they appear to be exact opposites. Gene is introverted and quiet intellectual, while Finny is a popular and carefree school sports star.
Their friendship enjoys times of great fun and laughter, but eventually Gene becomes obsessed by one-sided rivalry against Finny. He believes that Finny is trying to out-do him with his athletic success, which makes Gene oppose him even more.
One day they meet up at a special for them location – a tree next to the river where they used to jump off into the water. Right before Finny jumps off, Gene shakes the branch making him fall and breaking his leg. This uncontrolled impulse puts an end to Finny’s future as an athlete, leaving Gene in deep remorse for what he did. What happened is believed to be an accident but Gene’s sense of guilt won’t let him find peace. So he’ll need to find a way to take responsibility and seek redemption for his deeds.
