“Around the World in Eighty Days” by Jules Verne
The story of “Around the World in 80 days” begins with the introduction of Phileas Fogg, a perfectly mannered and wealthy Londoner, who is enjoying a peaceful life of unbreakable habits and order. In fact he is so precise in his desires, that he fired his last butler for bringing him shaving water 2 degrees colder than requested. This is how he met Passepartout, his new french valet. Seeking peace and quite after having a thrilling life himself, Passepartout isn’t suspecting in what unheard adventures Fogg is about to get him involved.
One of Phileas Fogg’s many routines is to go every evening to the Reform Club for a chat with the lads and to play some cards. This is where the whole trouble begins. One night he ends up in an argument that with the recently opened Railroad station in India it is now possible to travel around the world in eighty days. Challenged by his fellows to prove his assertion, he offers a bet of 20 000 pounds if he succeeds. As he heads on to this great journey he is unaware that detective Fix is on his trail. He is convinced that Fogg is behind a big bang robbery, and now is trying to escape with the money. So he follows him closely and puts obstacles in Fogg’s way, so he can arrest him as soon as he gets the warrant from England.
