“Catch 22” by Joseph Heller
Set during World War 2, in the years between 1942 and 1944, Catch 22 follows the faith of 256th airmen Squadron and its dire and inventive attempts to avoid seemingly deadly missions. Yossarian proves to be one of the most motivated malingers, which grants him the attention of Colonel Cathcart. He wants the soldiers to fulfill their duty and eventually he starts increasing the number of dangerous missions. This leaves the soldiers with only one option – to pretend to be mentally unfit for service. However, this last move of desperation leads Yossarian straight into the trap of Catch 22. According to it, men wanting to be relieved from dangerous missions are considered sane, thus cannot be considered as unfit for duty.
