“Civilization and Its Discontents” by Sigmund Freud
“Civilization and Its Discontents” is one of the most influential and popular works written by the father of the psychoanalysis – Sigmund Freud. In the book, he analyzes the conflict between the individual and the society originating from their controversial natures. According to Freud the individual has primal and dominating cravings such as the desire for sex or the tendency of violence, which are inconsistent with the principles of civilization. Thus, mankind has created laws and punishments for those acts to sustain itself while repressing these strong inborn instincts and drives. Therefore, Freud believes civilization comes at the high price of perpetual feelings of discontent and restricted possibilities of personal happiness.
