“Moby Dick, or the Whale” by Herman Melville
Ishmael is a young man from Manhattan, who thirsts for the excitement and the adventures of the open sea. He has already set sails a couple of times on merchant ships, but now he has the yearning for the greatest challenge of every seaman – serving on a whaling ship. Therefor he travels to New Bedford, where he stays in a local whalers’ tavern. As the inn is rather full he has to share a bed with the strange, tattooed and rather repulsive harpooner Queequeg. Eventually Ishmael recognizes the generosity and kindness of his new companion, and so they decide to seek together a whaling ship to serve on. They head on to the whaling capitol at the time – Nantucket. There they meet Peleg and Bildad – the owners of the “Peuquod” – a savage looking ship, decorated with the bones and teeth of sperm whales. After a hard bargain about the wage, Ishamael and Queequeg join the ship’s crew, under the command of the crude Captain Ahab. On his previous voyage Ahab encountered the whale Moby Dick, who bit off his leg, leaving him crippled and tormented by vengeance. Now Ishmael and Queequeg are going to aid their new captain in his quest of hate and revenge against the mighty whale.
