The Plot

Crusoe has the passion for the open sea, but his dreams are quite far from his parents’ ambitions. They want him to stay ashore and pursue a carrier in law, something he never wanted for himself. So despite his parents’ wishes, he sets sails on a misfortune voyage to Queen’s Dock in Hull which ends in a devastating storm. Despite the setback his desire to travel stays ever strong and eventually he sets out once again.

His second attempt however doesn’t yield too much success either. His ship is captured by pirates and he becomes a slave. For the next two years he is struggling with his faith, until he finally manages to escape on a small boat. He is found by a Portuguese captain who helps him to acquire a plantation. There he learns something that will be of a great value for him in the future – how to cultivate plants.

Years have passed since he decides to once more set out on a new voyage. This time he joins an expedition to bring slaves from Africa. Unfortunately his ship enters a vicious storm and he is washed away on an island he later names “The Island of Despair”. Sole survivor of the disaster, he overcomes the despair, savages whatever he can from the ship and settles down. He builds a shelter, starts growing rice, hunts and feeds his soul with poetry. He turns to God and finds gratitude for his faith, where he misses nothing but people.

Years later Crusoe finds out that cannibals visit the island to perform a grim ritual of eating prisoners. At first he plans to kill them for their sinful deeds, but then he realizes he has no right to do so. Instead he wishes to acquire a servant from the prisoners. As one of the prisoners escapes, Crusoe helps him out and names him Friday after the day when they met. He starts teaching him English and converts him to Christianity. Eventually when the cannibals return, they fight them off and rescue two more of their prisoners.

While looking for a way to get off the island with the help of his new companions, an English ship arrives. The ship is overtaken by the mutineers and they are planing to maroon their captain on the island. For Crusoe that’s the perfect opportunity to leave this cursed island once and for all. So together with the captain they make a deal and retake take ship. Now Crusoe can head back home with his new friend and seek his rightful inheritance, which he has been denied as he was believed to be long dead.
