“The Big Sleep” by Raymond Chandler
This whirl of double-crossings, filthy secrets and murders begins with the elderly General Sternwood and the troubles he has with his daughter – Carmen. Apparently she has a very bad taste for men as her father already had to pay her last boyfriend – Brody, to stay away from her. Now there is another man – Arthur Geiger, a merchant of rare books. He has found a way to blackmail Carmen, which forces the General to seek the detective services of the private investigator Philip Marlowe. Looking like an easy job, Marlowe takes the case and starts his investigation from Geiger’s book store. There he finds that Geiger is far from the man he claims to be. He’s been running a shady businesses, which eventually leads to his death. The case gets even more convoluted, when the General’s driver is found dead after being seen close to crime scene. Brody also shows up and he is planning on taking over Geiger’s illegal business. With plenty of suspects and little evidence, this affair might turn into a real challenge even for Marlowe’s brilliant detective mind.
